In short
A frugal month in Fort Kochi — a simple room taken monthly, local vegetarian food, daily classes with the long-stay discount, and walking everywhere — comes to roughly ₹35,000–45,000, around €380–490. A comfortable month with a good homestay, a mix of local and traveller restaurants, and some travel within Kerala is closer to ₹75,000–95,000. The three big variables are the room, how often you eat in traveller cafés, and how much you travel at weekends.
People ask us this every season, usually in the form: "I want to stay a month and practise every day — is that affordable?" For most visitors from Europe, North America or Australia the answer is yes, comfortably, and often for less than a month at home.
The numbers below are approximate ranges for 2026, in rupees with a rough euro conversion at around ₹95 to €1. Prices move, so treat these as a planning guide rather than a quotation. Where the figure is ours — the classes — it is exact.
The short version
| Style of stay | Per month | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| Frugal | ₹35,000 – 45,000 | €380 – 490 |
| Middle | ₹50,000 – 70,000 | €530 – 740 |
| Comfortable | ₹75,000 – 95,000 | €790 – 1,000 |
A room, by the month
This is the biggest line, and the one where staying a month changes things most. Nightly rates in Fort Kochi are tourist rates; monthly rates are a different conversation, and almost every guesthouse will have one if you ask.
- A simple room in a homestay, fan, shared or private bathroom, taken by the month: often ₹12,000–20,000.
- A good homestay room with air conditioning and hot water: ₹20,000–35,000 monthly, more in December and January.
- A small studio or apartment, if you are staying longer: ₹18,000–30,000, usually needing a deposit.
- Heritage hotels are a different market entirely and are priced by the night.
Two practical notes. First, arrive with a few nights booked and look at rooms in person before committing to a month; Fort Kochi is small and walkable, and what a place is like at 6 am matters when you have a 7:30 class. Second, December and early January are peak season, so a month starting in late January is cheaper than one starting on the 20th of December. Where to stay in Fort Kochi covers the areas.
Food
- Local vegetarian meal, a rice plate or banana-leaf lunch: ₹100–200.
- Breakfast at a local place, puttu or dosa with tea: ₹60–150.
- Traveller café breakfast or dinner with coffee: ₹400–800.
- Tender coconut, fruit, chai from a stall: ₹20–60 each.
- Homestay dinner, cooked to order: often ₹250–400 and usually the best meal of the day.
Eating locally, a month of food is ₹9,000–15,000. Eating in traveller cafés twice a day, it is ₹30,000 or more. That gap is where most of the difference between the three budgets lives. Vegetarian food in Fort Kochi covers what to order.
Yoga
Our own numbers, so these are exact. A drop-in class is ₹500 at the moment, a limited-time offer on the usual ₹600, and it becomes ₹700 from November 2026. Students who practise with us for more than a week get 30% off. Mats are provided and there is no booking or membership.
Practising six days a week for a month, with the long-stay discount, that is in the region of ₹8,000–10,000 — call it €85–105 for around 48 hours of teaching. A private session is ₹1,500 (₹2,000 from November 2026) if you want one or two alongside the group classes. Full details are on the services page, and yoga class fees in Kochi compares the market.
Getting around
Fort Kochi is walkable end to end, which is the main reason a month here is cheap. Budget for:
- Autorickshaw within Fort Kochi: ₹50–150. Agree the fare first, or use a meter.
- Ferry or Water Metro to Ernakulam: from about ₹20.
- Scooter hire, monthly: roughly ₹4,000–7,000, plus fuel. You need a valid licence and an international permit, and Indian traffic is not the place to learn.
- Airport transfer, each way: ₹1,200–1,800 by taxi. See airport to Fort Kochi for the cheaper options.
The extras people forget
- Travel insurance for the whole stay, covering physical activity.
- A local SIM or eSIM: data is famously cheap here, a few hundred rupees a month.
- Laundry: ₹30–80 a kilo, or free if your homestay has a line.
- Weekend travel. The backwaters, Munnar, a Kathakali performance. A weekend trip is ₹3,000–8,000 depending on how you travel.
- Ayurvedic massage or treatment: from about ₹1,500 a session at a reputable place; a course costs considerably more.
- Visa and flights, which dwarf everything above. See visas for India.

None of these include flights, visa or insurance.
Where the savings actually are
- Negotiate the room by the month, in person, and pay weekly or fortnightly until you trust the place.
- Eat one meal a day where the town eats. It is better food and a fifth of the price.
- Ask about the long-stay class discount rather than buying drop-ins one at a time.
- Come outside December and January if you can. The same room can be a third cheaper in September.
- Walk. Almost everything in Fort Kochi is within fifteen minutes.
If a month is more than you have, a week of yoga in Fort Kochi works out well too, and the 30% discount still applies once you pass seven days.
