In short
Most yoga teachers earn modestly and part-time. In the US, the government’s figure for fitness trainers and instructors, the category that includes yoga, is a median of $46,180 a year (May 2024). Studio classes typically pay $25–$60 each in the US, about £20–£40 in the UK and ₹500–₹1,500 in Indian cities. Full-time incomes come from combining group classes with private sessions, corporate work, workshops and retreats, rarely from studio classes alone.

I have watched seventy batches of trainees graduate, and the question I hear in the last week is almost always the same: “Can I actually live on this?” The honest answer is “some people can, most people combine it with something else, and the ones who make it work treat it as a small business.” This article sits under our 12-point guide to choosing a teacher training, because the money question belongs in that decision.
All figures below are approximate, collected in late 2026 from government statistics, career services and salary sites. Treat them as ranges, not promises.
What do yoga teachers earn a year?
| Country | Typical figure | Source and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $46,180 median a year (about $22 an hour) | US Bureau of Labor Statistics, “fitness trainers and instructors”, May 2024. Includes personal trainers; most yoga teachers are part-time and earn less than this. |
| United Kingdom | £20,000–£30,000 for full-time teachers; £25–£30 an hour on average | UK career services and salary aggregators. Most UK teachers are self-employed. |
| India | About ₹21,000 a month on average; ₹2.5–5.3 lakh a year at large chains | Salary sites such as AmbitionBox. Metro cities pay more than small towns. |
The US government figure is the most reliable number available, and it is still a rough guide for yoga. It lumps yoga teachers in with personal trainers and gym instructors. The same source projects 12% growth in these jobs between 2024 and 2034, faster than average.
What none of these figures capture well is the part-time teacher. The 2016 Yoga in America study by Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance found two people interested in becoming a teacher for every one teaching. That ratio is the economic fact underneath everything else in this article: there are a lot of qualified teachers, and studios know it.
How much do yoga teachers get paid per class?
| Setting | US | UK | India (cities) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio class, new teacher | $25–$40 | £20–£30 | ₹500–₹1,000 |
| Studio class, experienced | $40–$75 | £30–£50 | ₹1,000–₹2,000 |
| Gym or leisure centre | $25–$50 | £20–£35 | Often salaried |
| Private session (per hour) | $60–$150+ | £40–£80+ | ₹1,000–₹3,000+ |
| Corporate class | $75–$200 | £50–£120 | ₹1,500–₹5,000 |
Some studios pay a flat fee. Others pay per head, or a base plus a bonus once a class passes a certain size. Per-head pay rewards teachers who already have a following and punishes new ones, so ask which model a studio uses before you agree to a timetable.
Notice the gap between the first row and the private-session row. That gap is why most teachers who earn a living do it through one-to-one work. Our page on private yoga sessions describes what students are paying for when they book one.
How do yoga teachers make a full-time income?
Almost nobody lives on studio classes alone. Teachers who earn a full income usually combine four or five of these:
- Group classes. The visibility. Low pay per hour, but this is where private clients and workshop students find you.
- Private clients. The highest hourly rate and the most reliable income once you have a few regulars.
- Corporate and institutional work. Offices, schools, hospitals, sports clubs. Good rates, often booked by the term.
- Workshops. Two or three hours on one subject — inversions, pranayama, back care — charged per person.
- Retreats. Can be lucrative, can lose money. They need an audience first.
- Online classes. Low cost to run, but crowded. They work best for teachers who already have students. See how we run online classes from Kerala.
- Teacher training. The top of the ladder, and years away for a new graduate.
The common thread is that the higher-paid work depends on people who already trust you. That trust is built slowly, mostly in ordinary group classes.
What does a realistic teaching week earn?
Here is an illustrative week for an established teacher in a mid-sized US or European city. It is an example, not a forecast.
| Work | Per week | Rate | Weekly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio classes | 8 | $45 | $360 |
| Private clients | 5 | $90 | $450 |
| Corporate class | 2 | $120 | $240 |
| Monthly workshop, averaged | — | $600 a month | $150 |
| Total, before costs | 15 teaching hours | $1,200 |
Over 46 working weeks that is about $55,000 before costs and tax. Fifteen teaching hours does not sound like much. In practice it is three to four times that once you add travel, planning, messages and invoicing. Teaching more than twenty classes a week is how teachers burn out and lose their voices.
What costs come out of a yoga teacher’s pay?
These are the costs graduates forget to subtract:
- Insurance. Professional liability cover is expected by most studios.
- Travel between venues. Unpaid time as well as fares.
- Room hire if you run your own classes, workshops or privates.
- Registration and memberships. If you register with Yoga Alliance, that is US$50 to join and US$65 a year. Our Yoga Alliance guide explains when it is worth it.
- Continuing education. Further trainings and workshops, which most good teachers keep doing for life.
- No sick pay or holiday pay if you are self-employed, which most yoga teachers are.
Does your certificate change how much you earn?
It changes where you can get hired more than what you are paid.
Many studios in the US, UK and Europe ask for RYT 200 registration with Yoga Alliance. Some do not care, and private clients almost never ask. In India, government schemes, schools and some employers ask for certification from the Ministry of AYUSH’s Yoga Certification Board, whose first level, Yoga Protocol Instructor, requires at least 200 hours.
Our own position
Santhi School of Yoga & Vedanta Studies is not a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School. Our 28-day course gives you our own 200-hour certificate in the Sivananda tradition, and graduates cannot register as RYT 200. If you plan to teach in studios that require that registration, choose a course that offers it. We would rather tell you now.
A 300-hour or 500-hour qualification can help you get into teacher-training faculties and some studios, and lets you charge more for specialist work. It rarely changes the per-class rate on its own. Our 200 vs 300-hour comparison goes into this.
What does a realistic first year of teaching look like?
For most new teachers, the first year follows a familiar pattern:
- Months 1–3: teach anyone who will let you. Friends, colleagues, a free community class. You are learning to teach, not earning.
- Months 3–6: one or two paid classes a week, often covering for other teachers. Covering is how studios get to know you.
- Months 6–12: a regular slot or two, perhaps a first private client. Income is pocket money, not rent.
- Year two onward: the teachers who keep going build a timetable around a few regular classes and a growing private list.
Keep your other income through the first year. The graduates I have seen thrive almost all did. Our step-by-step guide to becoming a yoga teacher covers what to do before and after the training.
Can you make a living teaching yoga in India?
Yes, but the rates are local. Salaried posts at chains and wellness centres pay roughly ₹2 to ₹5 lakh a year. Private home sessions in Indian cities often run ₹1,000 to ₹3,000. Teachers in tourist towns who teach in English to travellers earn more, but the season is short and foreign nationals cannot work in India on a tourist or e-visa.
In our own corner of Kochi, public listings show group classes from about ₹400 to ₹500 a month at neighbourhood centres and private teachers from around ₹400 to ₹650 an hour. Our guide to class fees in Kochi has the detail.
Is a teacher training worth it if you never teach?
For many people, yes. Plenty of trainees on any course come with no plan to teach. They want a month of serious practice, the philosophy, and the discipline of a daily schedule. They usually leave with a practice that lasts for years.
If you are weighing it up purely as an investment, our breakdown of what a 200-hour training in India costs helps you work out the payback honestly.

Common questions
How much does a yoga teacher make a year?
In the US, the median for fitness trainers and instructors, which includes yoga teachers, was $46,180 in May 2024. Full-time UK teachers typically earn £20,000 to £30,000. In India, salaried yoga instructors earn roughly ₹2 to ₹5 lakh a year. Most yoga teachers work part-time and earn less than these figures from yoga alone.
How much do yoga teachers get paid per class?
Roughly $25 to $60 per studio class in the US, £20 to £40 in the UK and ₹500 to ₹1,500 in Indian cities, depending on experience and the studio’s pay model. Private sessions and corporate classes pay considerably more per hour.
Can you make a living as a yoga teacher?
Yes, but usually by combining group classes with private clients, corporate work, workshops or retreats. Very few teachers live on studio classes alone, and most keep other income through their first year or two.
Do I need Yoga Alliance registration to get paid?
Not always. Many studios in the US, UK and Europe ask for RYT 200, while private clients and many other employers do not. In India, the Ministry of AYUSH’s Yoga Certification Board matters more for government and school posts.
How long does it take to earn a full-time income teaching yoga?
Typically two to three years of steady teaching. The first year is usually spent gaining experience, covering classes and finding a first private client or two.
