In short

Cruise ships in Kochi dock at Willingdon Island, about 10 km and 20 to 30 minutes by taxi from Fort Kochi. Fort Kochi is compact enough to see independently in a day: the Chinese fishing nets, St. Francis Church, the heritage streets, and Mattancherry Palace and the Synagogue if it is not a Friday. Hire a taxi for the day or take an app cab, keep an hour spare before all-aboard, and check what is closed on the day of the week you dock.

Kochi is a regular stop on cruises around India and the Indian Ocean, mostly between November and April. Ships berth at Cochin Port on Willingdon Island, a man-made island in the harbour, at the Ernakulam Wharf or the smaller cruise terminal nearby. From there the historic quarter of Fort Kochi is only a short drive.

The ships offer organised excursions, and those are fine. But Fort Kochi is small, safe and easy to navigate, and many passengers enjoy it more on their own, at their own pace.

Getting from the terminal to Fort Kochi

  • Taxi for the day. The simplest option. Drivers wait at the port gate, and you can agree a price for a set number of hours with the stops you want. Settle the total, the hours and the stops before you set off.
  • App cab. Uber and Ola both work in Kochi. Handy for a one-way trip to Fort Kochi and back.
  • Auto-rickshaw. Fine for the short hops within Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. Agree the fare first.
  • By water. Willingdon Island has a Water Metro stop, and the harbour crossings are part of the fun. Check routes and timings on the day, as the network is still growing.

Allow 20 to 30 minutes each way by road. Traffic on the bridges can be heavy in the late afternoon, which matters on the way back.

First, check the day of the week

This is the most important piece of planning for a day in port.

The Synagogue also closes on Jewish holidays and for a break at lunchtime, usually noon to 2 pm. Timings in India change, so confirm on the day.

A plan for six to eight hours ashore

A day ashore, assuming the ship docks early in the morning
TimeWhat to do
First hourDrive to Fort Kochi. Start at the Chinese fishing nets while it is still cool and the crews are working.
Next 1.5 hoursWalk: Vasco da Gama Square, St. Francis Church, Santa Cruz Basilica, the heritage streets around Princess Street.
Late morningAuto or taxi to Mattancherry: the Palace murals and the Synagogue (before noon), then the spice warehouses and lanes of Jew Town.
LunchA Kerala meal, or fish bought at the nets and cooked across the road.
Early afternoonA café, a gallery or a little shopping in the shade.
ReturnBack to the port with at least an hour in hand before all-aboard.

With less time, cut Mattancherry and stay in Fort Kochi proper, which is all walkable. With a late departure, add the sunset at the fishing nets, or a Kathakali performance if the ship stays into the evening. Performances usually begin with the make-up around 5 pm and the show around 6.

What to leave for next time

  • The backwaters. Alleppey is two hours away each way. It is lovely, but not in a single port day without an organised tour.
  • Swimming. Fort Kochi Beach is for walking, not swimming.
  • Ernakulam’s malls. Unless you need something, the old town is the reason to come ashore.

A yoga class on a port day

Travellers who practise yoga at home often want a class while they are in India, and a cruise day can allow one, depending on the ship’s hours.

  • The 7:30–9:30 am class only works if you can be ashore very early, which few ships allow.
  • The 3:30–5:30 pm class suits a ship that stays into the evening. The school is in Chirattapalam, five minutes by auto from the Fort Kochi waterfront, so allow for the drive back to the port after class.
  • A private session is the flexible option: one to one, arranged around the hours you have ashore. It is ₹1,500 (₹2,000 from November 2026). Message us with your docking and all-aboard times.

Everything is taught in English, and mats are provided, so there is nothing to bring but comfortable clothes.

Practical tips for the day

  • Money: carry some rupees for autos, entry fees and small shops. Cards work in bigger places.
  • Dress: shoulders and knees covered for the churches and the Synagogue.
  • Heat: sightsee early, take water, rest in the shade at midday.
  • Phone: save the ship’s agent number and the port address before you leave.
  • Time: keep an hour in reserve. Traffic on the bridges back to Willingdon Island is the usual cause of a rushed return.

A class or private session on your day ashore

Group classes every day at 7:30–9:30 am and 3:30–5:30 pm, ₹500 a class (a limited-time offer; normally ₹600, and ₹700 from November 2026), or a private session arranged around your ship’s hours. Taught in English; mats provided. Message us with your docking and all-aboard times.

For more on the town, things to do in Fort Kochi covers every sight in detail, and the Chinese fishing nets explains the most famous one.
